Sometimes people ask what is the difference between the korean beef bar-b-q dishes: bulgogi and kalbi (sometimes spelled galbi).

Before answering that question, first note that there are difference styles of both bul-go-gi and kalbi, and some kalbi is not seasoned at all (which makes it, well, plain barbeque beef). We’ll write about that in another post.

Bulgogi is beef, usually loin, and kalbi is beef short ribs. Both can be made marinaded, in similar sauces. And a side sauce can be served with both. However, the side dishes (panchan) – things such as potato, or seaweed, and kimchi – are not related to the dish itself. Panchan will vary from restaurant to restaurant more than they will vary from dish-to-dish within a restaurant.

Both dishes can be grilled at the table, or prepared by a professional korean chef in the kitchen.

Our recipes for some of our dishes are the same as what we (and other Koreans) use at home. Korean food in many restaurants is cooked one serving at a time (well, except for white rice, which we always cook in a large cooker!).

We hope you appreciate our style of cooking. When you visit & want to know about our dishes, we can explain more than you might expect. What is Army Soup (Budae jjigae)? We have more details than what you might find online. And we serve large bowl of jjigae (stew/soup), the way we eat at home. And we can cook bulgogi in the kitchen, or you can watch us cook multiple orders on the grill at your table.

Because we have changes in our menu, some dishes you might be looking for may be missing. Ask us if you have a favorite dish… maybe we can make it for you “korea home-style”!
